Financial designations are special recognition of both academic achievement in the area of the financial sector. Maintaining a designation usually requires the advisor to also maintain active membership in a professional membership association and to perform ongoing continuing professional development of continuing education to maintain a level of knowledge in the domain.

For Financial Planners in particular, there are a number of recognized designations. It is important to remember that a designations is an indication of personal competency of an individual, and not a indication of practice behaviour. As an example, a Chartered Accountant may be working as a short-order cook and maintain his designation if he continues meeting those requirements.

How an individual runs their financial planning business is usually considered a Practice Standard and will often be outlined by associations or in general standards like ISO 22222.
